HONORING HER MEMORY
FC Indiana to Honor Eudy Simelane
FC Indiana forward Veronica Phewa has lost her former South Africa WNT teammate and a close friend Eudy Simelane.
Simelane, 31, was murdered by five men on April 27th, 2008 in Kwatema, east of Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to police, Simelane was returning home with friends from a tavern and apparently confronted by a gang of youths. She was allegedly gang raped and repeatedly stabbed.
"Everyone at FC Indiana wishes to express our greatest sympathies to Veronica and to Eudy’s family. This is a difficult time for everyone in South Africa women’s soccer community,” said FC Indiana coach Shek Borkowski.
He went on: "We hope that we can help Veronica handle this tragedy in private and we ask that everyone respects Veronica’s privacy during this difficult time. "
According to FC Indiana spokesman Jeff Millier, FC Indiana players will wear black armbands during the 2008 W-League season to honor Eudy Simelane’ memory.
