MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Marquette’s Axel Sjoberg
Marquette redshirt freshman Axel Sjoberg has been named the Chicagoland Soccer News Men's College Player of the Week for the week ending September 16.
Sjoberg had game-winning goals in back-to-back games as the Golden Eagles defeated both Michigan and Michigan State over the weekend.
On Friday night, Sjoberg scored twice in the second half as Marquette came back to defeat Michigan 2-1 at Valley Fields.
After the Wolverines had taken a 1-0 lead, the 6-foot-7 Sjoberg headed a corner kick from Paul Dillon past Michigan keeper Adam Grinwis.
Sjoberg’s decisive goal broke a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute. Sebastian Jansson had a shot on frame that was deflected by a Michigan defender. John Pothast got control of the ball and unleashed another strike from just outside the six-yard box that again was blocked by the defense. However, Sjoberg was there for the second rebound, settled the ball at his feet and flicked it into the net with a nifty backheel for the game-winner.
Two days later, in East Lansing, against the Spartans, Sjoberg got his head on a corner kick served in by Bryan Ciesiulka to put away the golden goal in the 108th minute.
