108th minute goal lifts Marquette over Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE – Senior forward Andy Huftalin scored the golden goal in the 108th minute, his team-leading fourth goal of the season, to give No. 10 Marquette a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Wisconsin Wednesday at Valley Fields.
Junior midfielder Bryan Ciesiulka attempted a shot at the top of the box that settled at the feet of Huftalin. Onside, Huftalin took one touch to create space before unleashing the game-winner just past the outstretched arms of a diving Chase Rau in the Badgers' goal.
With the victory, MU remains improves to 9-0-0, while Wisconsin falls to 2-4-3 with the loss.
Following a series of half-chances by both sides, Marquette was finally able to find the back of the net in the 37th minute to grab a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Sebastian Jansson opened the scoring with his third goal of the season. Senior forward Adam Lysak played to ball to senior midfielder Ryan Robb on the right corner of the box, and Robb chipped it to the far post where Jansson was able to beat his marker and head it past Rau.
Wisconsin equalized in the 78th minute to level the match at 1-1. Nick Janus was on the end of a cross by Toni Ramadani and Janus beat MU goalkeeper Charlie Lyon with a quality header from 10 yards in the middle of the box.
A flurry in front of the goal in the 88th minute nearly led to the go-ahead score by the Golden Eagles as Ciesiulka got off a shot that was cleared off the line by a defender, and Jansson's strike was deflected out of bounds and over the end line for a MU corner kick.
Marquette continued knocking on the door in extra time, highlighted by a shot by freshman right back Adam Hermsen that skimmed over the crossbar as time expired in the first overtime period and a diving header by Huftalin in the opening minutes of double-overtime that went just wide of the goal.
Wisconsin took 15 shots in the match, but just two were on frame, while Marquette tallied a total of 21 shots, two shy of matching their season high. Six different MU players recorded a shot on goal.
MU remains one of three teams in NCAA Division I with perfect records going into the last weekend of September, along with High Point and Cornell. The Golden Eagles, who are 17-3-1 in their last 21 matches, also boast the nation's second-longest regular-season win streak, having won their last 10 regular-season contests going back to last season.
The Golden Eagles travel to Providence to take on the Friars in the first divisional match-up of the season for both teams on Saturday at noon CT.
