Marquette falls to Georgetown 2-1
MILWAUKEE – Things in the BIG EAST Blue Division just got more interesting as the previously undefeated No. 4/2 Marquette dropped its first match of the season Saturday, 2-1, to No. 10/14 Georgetown at North Kehoe Field.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 12-1-0 (3-1-0 BIG EAST), while the Hoyas improve to 12-2-1 (3-2-0)
“We struggled to find a pattern of play today, and eventually [Georgetown] won out by controlling the way that they wanted to play, preventing us from playing the way that we wanted to play, and in the end we just had too few moments,” said MU head coach Louis Bennett. “Credit goes to Georgetown, but as we shown, you can never knock us out.”
For the second time in as many years, the Hoyas’ Steve Neumann helped hand Marquette its first conference loss with his game-winning goal in the 50th minute.
MU freshman defender Axel Sjoberg was whistled for a foul at the top of the 18-yard box, setting up a free kick which Neumann deposited into the right side of the net past a line of Golden Eagles defenders and a diving Charlie Lyon to give the home side a 2-1 advantage.
The Hoyas started out with much of the possession, as MU struggled to get forward. The anxiety only increased, but just momentarily, after the visitors surrendered the opening goal.
Georgetown grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute off a set piece. Neumann served a long free kick from the far side of the field into the box where he connected with Tommy Muller, who headed it into the back of the net.
“I though both of their goals were good goals,” Bennett said. “Fortunately, Bryan Ciesiulka got us back into it. There were times throughout the game, where I recognized us and there were times that I didn’t, however.”
Marquette equalized in the 35th minute on an opportunistic goal Ciesiulka. A miss-hit clearance from the Georgetown backline ended up at the feet of the junior midfielder, who ripped a low shot from nearly 30 yards out inside the right corner of the net.
In the 79th minute, junior left back Paul Dillon played a long cross to the far post that was headed back to the near side by sophomore Kelmend Islami, but senior Andy Huftalin was unable to get a touch in front of an empty net.
Both sides finished with five corner kicks apiece, while Georgetown recorded 20 shots compared to 13 taken by MU. Marquette’s second-leading scorer, redshirt junior Adam Lysak, left the game early with an apparent hamstring injury and did not return.
Marquette continues its two-game road stretch on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Pittsburgh.
