WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Illinois' Claire Wheatley
Illinois freshman goalkeeper Claire Wheatley has been named Chicagoland Soccer News Women's College Player of the Week for the week ending November 17.
The native of Plano, Texas helped lead the Illini into the second round of the NCAA tournament for the ninth time after Illinois defeated Washington State in the opening round Saturday on a muddy Lower Soccer Field.
Wheatley made a career-high 11 saves in regulation and a pair of scoreless overtime periods and then made two more stops during a penalty kick shootout -- on the Cougars first two attempts -- as Illinois advanced 3-1 on PKs.
"Claire came to play today," Illinois coach Janet Rayfield said. "It was tough to hold onto the ball today, so what was even more significant was the second save. For a kid from Texas to come up here, play in this type of weather and do what she did today as a freshman, you have to give her kudos for that."
