BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — For the second match in a row, sophomore Eriq Zavaleta found the back of the net twice as the Hoosiers posted a 2-0 win over Wisconsin Saturday night at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana improves to 9-2-1 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play. Wisconsin drops to 3-5-3, 0-2 in Big Ten action.
“This was a really good result tonight,” said Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley. “The performance was excellent. Our ball movement and creating chances was there and our energy and mindset from the start was fantastic. We were able to physically impose ourselves while also playing some great soccer.”
Zavaleta netted his third game-winning goal of the season and 10th score overall in the 11th minute to give Indiana a 1-0 lead. Junior A.J. Corrado took the corner kick and the ball was sent into the mixer where junior Nikita Kotlov flicked it on to Zavaleta. The sophomore pounced on the ball and took a shot from three yards out, getting passed UWgoalkeeper Chase Rau.
That was the only real action of the first half until the 43rd minute when Wisconsin’s Chris Prince fired a shot from 10 yards out that forced IU goalkeeper Luis Soffner to make a spectacular save, parrying the ball over the cross bar as he dove to his left.
.
The Hoosiers got off to a quick start after the halftime break and put the game out of reach with another Zavaleta score, this one coming in the 49th minute. Corrado picked up his second assist of the night, playing the ball up to Zavaleta who chipped an on-rushing Rau.
It wass Zavaleta’s 11th goal this season and his fourth of the week. Zavaleta has scored two or more goals in four matches this season (Saint Louis, Clemson, Kentucky).
Freshman Femi Hollinger-Janzen sent in a wicked header wide left of the net in the 55th minute, jumping over his defender to meet the service of sophomore Patrick Doody.
In the 62 minute Corrado took a shot on the run that was stopped by Rau, one of three saves on the night for the freshman keeper.
The Badgers had a scoring opportunity in the 68th minute when a shot from Kyle McCrudden was cleared off the line by junior Harrison Petts for the team save.
Zavaleta nearly made it a hat trick in the closing minutes as he ran past his defender on a breakaway but his uncontested shot was sent wide right.
Soffner finished with two saves en route to his seventh shutout on the season. The Hoosiers have yet to allow a goal in Big Ten play, outscoring opponents 5-0 in three matches. Rau made three saves as IU haled a 12-8 shots advantage.
Indiana is back on the pitch this Wednesday as it travels to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Louisville Cardinals at 7 p.m. ET.
