PHILADELPHIA--Real Madrid’s performance at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday afternoon was not as dominating in the scoreline as some of their other U.S. games, but the Galacticos still outclassed travel- weary Celtic en route to a 2-0 win.
Using two completely different lineups in each half, Real Madrid outshot the Scottish side 17-4, with Celtic getting nary a serious look at goal.
Unlike Wednesday’s game, a 4-1 rout of AC Milan at Yankee Stadium, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and Kaka assisted on 3 goals, it wasn’t the biggest stars in the Merengue’s lineup that lit up the scoreboard.
In the 22nd minute, Gonzalo Higuain dribbled into the Celtic penalty area, only to have the ball stripped away on the doorstep of the goal. Jose Maria Callejon controlled the loose ball and walked it into the open net.
Real doubled their lead in the 67th minute, when Karim Benzema got in alone on the left side, danced around a Celtic defender and slipped a shot across the goalmouth, off the right post and into the net.
