PORTLAND, Ore.---The Portland Timbers scored off a pair of corner kicks to upend the Chicago Fire 2-1 Sunday at Jeld-Wen Field.
Eric Brunner staked the Timbers to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute of the wide-open game, with a side-volley from the center of the six-yard box. The play started with Franck Songo’o’s left side corner kick, that was centered by Hanyer Mosquera to DP Kris Boyd, whose unsuccessful bicycle kick left the ball with Brunner.
Jalil Anibaba equalized for the Fire (4-3-3, 15 pts) in the 39th minute, after Marco Papa found him unmarked on the right side of the penalty area.
Portland’s game winner came in the 52nd minute. A corner kick by Sal Zizzo was headed by Boyd and deflected off the leg of the Fire’s Logan Pause and into the net.
The win lifts Portland (3-5-3, 12 points) over the skidding LA Galaxy and out of the Western Conference cellar.
