July 13, 2010 BACK IN SUPERLILGA Fire open against Monarcas Morelia
The Chicago Fire get yet another break from MLS action starting Wednesday night when they open their second straight appearance in SuperLiga against Monarcas Morelia at Toyota Park at 8:30 pm CT.
The Fire are coming off a two straight MLS losses, having dropped a 1-0 decision to the defending MLS champion Real Salt Lake last Thursday. The shutout was just the second of the season for Chicago – the first since a 1-0 loss at New York to open the season.
Last year, the Fire made it to the final of the SuperLiga losing in the final on penalty kicks to Tigres UANL
Monarcas Morelia return to SuperLiga for the first time since 2007, when they did not get out of the group phase.
Morelia concluded their buildup to SuperLiga with a 3-1 loss to Tigres UANL in Monterrey on Saturday. The lone goal came from Luis Gabriel Rey in the 88th minute. Before leaving home, Monarcas suffered a surprising 2-1 loss to Irapuato of the Liga de Ascenso (second division) at Estadio Morelos. The lone Monarcas goal came from Luis Miguel Noriega in the ninth minute as the starters played the opening 45 minutes: Federico Vilar – José Manuel Cruz Alta, Adrián Aldrete, Adrián García Arias, Mauricio Romero, Luis Miguel Noriega, Jaime Lozano, Hugo Droguett, Elías Hernández, Luis Gabriel Rey, Miguel Sabah. Morelia earlier defeated their Liga de Ascenso affiliate, Venados de Mérida, 4-1. The Morelia goals came from Hugo Droguett, Luis Noriega, Elías Hernández and Claudio Boy. Morelia will begin the season with Federico Vilar in goal after a stunning swap in the summer transfer market. Vilar moves to Morelia after seven seasons with Atlante; Moises Muñoz, who had been with Morelia for 11 seasons and starter for the past seven, went to Atlante.
