Fowlkes nets three in Red Stars rout

NAPERVILLE, Ill.–Lauren Fowlkes scored three goals to lead the Chicago Red Stars to a 5-0 win over the ASA Chesapeake Charge Sunday.

Additional goals were scored by Lori Chalupny and 17-year-old Zoey Goralski. The Red Stars improve to 5-0-0 in the WPSL Elite league, with two games still in hand on the first-place Boston Breakers (6-1-0).

The Red Stars’ first goal, in the 32nd minute, was the result of a free kick about 30 yards out on the right side of the field. Michele Weissenhofer placed a ball onto the head of a leaping Fowlkes.

Just eight minutes later, midfielder Alyssa Mautz saw Chalupny streaking down the middle of the pitch and played her a perfect arching pass that she was able to tap down and authoritatively blast into the net, leaving Chesapeake ‘keeper Erin Quinn little opportunity to react.

Feeling comfortable and confident with their 2-0 lead heading into the half, Red Stars’ Head Coach Rory Dames was able to sit a few of the team’s starters and give some of his bench players some minutes. One player who took advantage of remaining on the pitch was Fowlkes, who with tandem-partner Amanda Cinalli providing her with excellent passes, was able to put in back-to-back goals in the 77th and 80th minutes, securing her first hat-trick of the year.

Goralski, the Red Stars’ youngest player and making her second appearance of the year, put the final touches on the scoreboard with an 85th minute goal, courtesy of an Ashlee Elliott pass.
