Instead of salvaging the year with an appearance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final, the Fire fell to an equally abysmal team, the Philadelphia Union, 1-0 in front of a sparse crowd at PPL Park Wednesday night.

Fire head to Philadelphia for Open Cup, MLS double

Sitting in last place well past the halfway point of the season does not bode well for the Chicago Fire's playoff chances. Head coach Frank Yalllop is not ready to completely write off the season, but he knows what a difficult position the team is in, with only 22 points at this stage of the season, the lowest total in all of MLS.

CHICAGO Should the Chicago Fire advance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Final will be played at Toyota Park on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The Fire face the Philadelphia Union in the semifinal round at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
